The Second Sunday of Advent was very special for us this year. Godson George Justis Stotz and his mom (our best friend) Hannah, were on hand to light the candles of the Advent wreath and savor the gathering glow of the season.
Just the day before, I’d attended (and covered for The Monitor), the annual Gaudium et Spes Mass for Ministers of Charity and Justice in St. Gregory the Great Church, Hamilton Square. While at the social hour following the Mass, I noticed a marvelous Advent resource — a small booklet listing all the Advent activities unfolding this year in St. Greogory the Great Parish.
The back cover of the booklet contained prayers for Advent that I’d like to share with you now.
We used the “Blessing of an Advent Wreath” as we lit the second candle.
Blessing of an Advent Wreath:
Lord our God, we praise you for your Son, Jesus Christ. He is Emmanuel, the hope of the peoples. He is the wisdom that teaches and guides us. He is the Savior of every nation. Lord God, let your blessing come upon us as we light the candles of this wreath. May the wreath and its light be a sign of Christ’s promise to bring us salvation. May he come quickly and not delay. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen
Table Blessing for Advent
Blessed are you, Lord of all creation, in darkness and light. Blessed are you in this food and in our sharing. Blessed are you as we wait in joyful hope for the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen
